Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic in terms of population and area, the largest city in Moravia. It is the seat of the South Moravian Region. The city has a total area of 230.18 km² and has approximately 379,000 inhabitants, with about 700,000 inhabitants living in its metropolitan area. The Svratka and Svitava rivers flow through Brno and converge in the southern part of the city.

Today city is an important centre of education with 29 faculties of ten universities and other colleges with almost 65,000 students. The formerly dominant engineering plants in the city include Zbrojovka (means Armory), tractor manufacturer Zetor and others. In the 19th century, thanks to its well-developed textile industry, Brno was nicknamed “Austrian” or “Moravian Manchester”; in the 21st century, thanks to the development of information technology, it is referred to as “Czech” or “Moravian Silicon Valley.”
